Dr Caleb Mailoni Fundanga

 

Dr Caleb Mailoni Fundanga was appointed Governor of the Bank of Zambia in March of 2002, after having served as Senior Advisor to the President of the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire from 1998. Dr. Fundanga further served as an Executive Director at the African Development Bank, before being appointed as Senior Advisor.

Prior to serving at the African Development Bank, Dr. Fundanga had served in senior positions in Government. He began his career with Government at Permanent Secretary level in the Ministry of Finance, served for six years at Cabinet Office before finally winding up in the Office of the President as Permanent Secretary in charge of the National Commission for Development Planning.

Dr. Fundanga began his economics career as an academician at the University of Zambia, soon after completing his PhD at Konstanz University in 1985. He earlier completed a Masters degree in Economics at the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.

Since becoming Governor of the Bank of Zambia, Dr. Fundanga has instilled a culture of hard work and perseverance which has seen him and the Central Bank achieve major international recognition. Among these achievements has been the Banker Magazine Award of “Central Banker of the Year – Global and Africa” at the beginning of 2007, as well as the Emerging Markets Magazine Award of “Central Banker of the Year 2007”, bestowed in September, 2007 in Washington DC.

Dr. Fundanga is currently Alternate Governor of the IMF Board of Governors, he is also the Chairperson of the Programmes Committee of the African Research Consortium, of which he is also a Board member. Further, he is a Member of the African Export and Import Bank Board and Executive Committee. He also serves as Board member and Vice Chairman of the Zambia Revenue Authority and as Chairperson on the MEFMI Board of Governors. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Dr. Fundanga has served as President of the World University Service International, as Chairperson of the Economics Association of Zambia, and as Treasurer of the University of Zambia Students Union. He is currently the Chairman of the Junior Achievement Zambia Board.

Dr. Fundanga, who is married with three children, enjoys literature with a bias towards developmental issues.
